September Update

The summer displays continued to bloom well, the red theme reminding us of the centenary of the end of World War 1. They also helped us achieve a ‘silver gilt’ award from Yorkshire in Bloom, which announced the results this month. We were very pleased to hear that our joint venture with the British Legion at the railway station to mark the centenary, including floral displays and informative posters about Todmorden and its citizens during WW1, was awarded ‘best in category’ for commemorative displays.

Members of our team and our work at the station also appeared in a film produced by Northern Rail to showcase the work of volunteers at northern stations. This was presented at a conference and can be found on YouTube. As usual, we had a stall at the IET Harvest Festival, where we gave out bunches of lavender from our town gardens.

Weekly Sunday morning work sessions continued and we are pleased that the Todmorden News/Hebden Bridge Times has been featuring our monthly garden column written by one of our members, and a report on the results of the YIB competition.

The garden club at Castle Hill primary school reopened at the start of term, its young gardeners as keen as ever to tend the vegetables and flowers, and of course claim their reward of ‘breadsticks, cheese ‘n chives’. We have been harvesting vegetables and planting spring bulbs. The children were happy to hear that YIB made lovely comments about them in their judges’ report.
