October Update

This month began in celebratory mood; a wonderful evening was had by all who attended the awards presentation for our annual Garden Competition at the Central Methodist chapel. There had been many new entrants this year, and as always the standard was very high. It was a great opportunity to celebrate the skills and enthusiasm of local gardeners and a chance for them to meet each other and enjoy the delicious buffet provided by our members. The event was attended by the mayor and mayoress who presented Sheila Greenwood with her well deserved ‘Community Champion’ award from Yorkshire in Bloom.

The summer bedding in the barrier baskets and large planters was replaced with spring bulbs, including hyacinths, and topped with trailing ivy & burgundy coloured violas. The colour combination is looking very effective, and we are hoping pedestrians passing by will enjoy the gorgeous scent from the hyacinths in the spring. As an experiment we left some of the ‘bacopa’ plants from the summer bedding in place as it mingles well with the ivy & violas. It seems to be surviving!

Hyacinths have also been planted in an area of the Sensory Garden, next to one of the benches, along with a honeysuckle; these will provide scent earlier in the season before the lavender appears. Sempervivums have been added in another area to give an interesting tactile experience, and of course they make an interesting visual pattern.

Planning continues for the ‘Todmorden Open Gardens’ event to be organised jointly with the ‘Open Studios’ group. Regular meetings are taking place and it is hoped that this exciting new event will take place early in July next year.
