June Update

This has definitely been a bloom filled month, with barrier baskets flowering profusely and the lovely hanging baskets now in place. We hope visitors to the indoor market will enjoy the 3 tier planters that we have placed by the entrance doors; and thanks to market traders who take them in at the end of the day. The large planters on Fielden Wharf have been replanted and are now sporting smart box pyramids complemented with bee friendly golden marjoram and bright French marigolds.

As the Tour de Tod event approaches, the wicker bike sculptures are blooming and our members have been busy decorating the town with yellow bunting & promoting the shop window competition (enquire at TIC for details).

Our poppy tribute to the WW1 centenary is now in place in the Peace Garden. Thanks to Fielden Factors for plywood, Sheila Greenwood for pattern design & organizing, Alan Butterworth for intricate wood working, Pennine Forge for spray painting them.

We had a great sunny day at Todmorden Agricultural Show; many thanks to the families and their children who took part in our sow a sunflower seed and the design a card competitions. Additionally, Marianne Sutcliffe provided splendid flower arrangements on our behalf for the president’s luncheon. We also launched our annual Local Garden Competition, and look set to have a bumper crop of entrants. Entry forms are available from the Tourist Information Centre or you can enter online – leave a message on the contact page on this site.

Our garden club at Castle Hill school has closed a little early for the summer holidays due to building work; but not before pupils planted out sunflowers and calendula that they had grown from seed. These are now thriving in Incredible Edible’s Pollination Street garden.

As July approaches we have a busy time preparing for the Yorkshire in Bloom summer judging, but feel confident that the floral displays around the town are looking impressive and make a great contribution to the Tour de Tod celebration of the Grand Depart in Yorkshire. We meet again on July 2nd for a work session & meeting.
